These summer car care tips are written for South African conditions: high UV, Highveld storms, salt air and long holiday drives. The short version: wash the car every week or two, keep wax or sealant on the paint, shade the cabin, and check the battery, tyres and fluids before the holiday trip.
We hand wash cars at our branches every day, so these tips come from what we see in the wash bay. Some jobs suit a driveway at home. Others need proper car detailing.

Why a South African Summer Is Hard on a Car
Heat is only part of it. The South African Weather Service regularly forecasts a very high or extreme UVB sunburn index on summer days, and storms, hail, salt air and sand all arrive in the same season. Each one wears on a different part of the car, so the tips below work through the paint, the cabin, the mechanicals and the clean-up after the trip.

Protect the Paint From UV and Heat
The clear coat is the paint’s sunscreen. According to PPG, the clear coat is built to absorb UV, and once it is too thin, UV reaches the colour coat underneath and breaks down its bonds. Fading and a chalky, oxidised finish are what you see next.
How to protect car paint from sun: keep the clear coat clean and waxed or sealed.

How UV damages car paint once the clear coat wears thin. Wash Off Dust, Sap and Bird Droppings Promptly
Dust is grit that scratches when it is wiped off dry. Sap and bird droppings bake on in the heat. Bird droppings are acidic, and a hot panel speeds up the damage to the clear coat, so lift them off soon rather than leaving them for the weekend wash.
Myth: a hot, sunny afternoon is ideal for washing. Reality: soap dries on hot paint before you can rinse it. Wash in the shade every week or two, or bring the car in for one of our car wash services.
Wax or Sealant as a Barrier
Wax or sealant puts a sacrificial layer over the clear coat. Meguiar’s recommends waxing three or four times a year. Follow the product label. At the branch, our Duck’s Back package adds high definition wax to the hand wash, and the Thunder Brothers price list shows what each package includes.
Spotting Sun Damage on Car Paint Early
Sun damage on car paint shows first on the roof and bonnet: chalky paint, faded reds and blacks, and faded plastic trim. To fix sun damage on car paint, a machine polish often brings it back if the clear coat is intact, which is what paint correction is for. Failed clear coat usually needs a respray at a panel shop.

How to Keep Your Car Cool in Summer, Inside and Out
A car parked in full sun turns into an oven, and the dashboard cracks and fades over time. Five simple habits help:
- Use a windscreen sunshade whenever the car is parked in the open.
- Park under a shade-net carport or in covered parking where you can.
- Crack the windows where it is safe to do so.
- Wipe the dash with a UV-safe product to slow cracking.
- Keep the cabin clean, because spills smell worse in the heat. A car valet handles the deep clean.

Before the Holiday Drive: Battery, Tyres and Fluids
A breakdown on the N1 or N2 with a full boot is a poor start to the holidays. Three checks cover most of the risk.
Battery
AutoX, maker of Willard and SABAT batteries, says prolonged heat gradually speeds up internal wear, while cold raises the energy needed to start the engine. A battery worn down over summer can then struggle on the first cold mornings. Our 10 Willard fitment branches offer a free battery check with no need to book, listed on our battery fitment page. For the bigger picture, read how long a car battery lasts in South Africa.
Battery three years or older? Test it before the holiday trip.
Tyres
Volvo’s owner guidance says to check pressure when the tyres are cold, after the car has stood for about three hours, against the placard on the driver’s door pillar. Check the spare too. Worn or cracked tyres go to a tyre fitter.
Coolant, Oil and Wipers
- Coolant and oil levels
- Wiper blades and washer fluid
- Headlights, brake lights and indicators
- The windscreen, inside and out, because low sun on a dirty screen makes glare much worse
Low levels, leaks or warning lights mean a visit to a mechanic before you leave.

After the Beach and the Bush: Salt, Sand and Storms
Salt air settles on the paint and underneath the car, so rinse the underbody after a Garden Route or West Coast trip, and vacuum beach sand out before it grinds into the carpet. Summer also brings Highveld thunderstorms and hail, so park under cover when the clouds build. After a storm, our hail damage car care guide covers what to check first. Dents go to a panel shop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: How do I protect my car’s paint from the South African sun?
Answer: Keep the paint clean, keep wax or sealant on it, and park in the shade where you can. Chalky paint can often be polished back if the clear coat is still intact.Question: Does hot weather shorten a car battery’s life?
Answer: Yes. Long spells of heat speed up internal wear in a car battery. Cold weather then asks more of it at start-up, so a battery weakened over summer is more likely to let you down in winter. A free test tells you where it stands.Question: How often should I wash my car in summer?
Answer: Every week or two, out of direct sun. Rinse it soon after a beach trip or a gravel road so salt and dust do not sit on the paint.Question: What should I check before a long holiday drive?
Answer: Check tyre pressure while the tyres are cold, spare included, then coolant, oil, wipers, washer fluid and lights. Test a battery that is three years or older, and clean the windscreen inside and out. -
